Dmoz listing that hurts Google SERPs

JohnScott started an interesting thread over at the V7n webmaster forums about how Google stopped using his actual page title (V7 Quality Web Hosting - Voted Best Host of the Year) and started using the Dmoz title (V7n Inc.). The site used to be on Google's first page for quality web hosting. No longer.

VE Tom left an interesting comment on the topic on Internet Marketing Blog.

Spam reminds me to backup my sites

You may remember how unithosting.net vanished into thin air taking many of my web sites (that I hadn't backed up) with them. Well I've learned my lesson but did get a spammy reminder today:

In today’s fast paced data-centric world of information technology, businesses have developed a reliance on digital data. We have particularly developed a dependence on data stored on various magnetic media such as hard drives, removable disks, and magnetic backup tapes. (This could be file data or application data, such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, Oracle, Lotus Domino or Lotus Notes). While some users may never have had a problem with loss of data due to viruses, Internet worms, file corruption, flood or fire, most of us have at some time experienced the frustration and loss of productivity that comes with the loss of computer data.

It is more than possible that someone in your office deleted files off the network that your entire team had been working on for months. Or maybe the corporate firewall didn’t stop the latest Internet virus that has a penchant for overwriting “.doc” files with junk data. Like it or not, if you connect your computers and IT infrastructure to the Internet (and in some cases, even if you don’t), your mission critical data is at risk. The question is: What can you do about it?

An excellent solution is to employ offsite backups. Offsite backup solutions allow you to store critical data that is crucial to your business or personal computing experience. Offsite backup providers make it quick and easy for you to back up your most important files to a secure, offsite facility that offers redundant storage, and round the clock accessibility to your files in the event of a critical “system meltdown”. When you use an online offsite backup provider, you can be secure in knowing that your files and important application data will be available to you no matter what happens to the machines you work with every day.

Even if your computers or servers needs to be completely formatted or even replaced, your laptop may have been stolen you can have the peace of mind that the most important part of your computing experience — the data you generate on a day to day basis — is safe and secure and always available to you.

Your DATA is your Life. Protect it.

Bluefind's back - free for blogs

Good thing I've been saving my money. Bluefind is back. John Scott is determined to make it (once again) one of the premeir web directories out there. I wouldn't bet against him either.

Bluefind has been getting a nice overhaul to make sure its well-organized and also has a little green in the Google toolbar.

It's the perfect time to submit your sites and the best part is that they list quality content pages (not your sitemap). Go get your deep links (and don't forget that my directory also links to quality content pages)!

More stress from Registerfly.com

Some of you may recall Registerfly.com billing me three times for the same transaction. More billing trouble today. I renew two domain names that didn't transfer in time (they can't be transfered when they're going to expire in a couple of days). The renewals fail. My credit card is charged. Here we go again.

I call up and they put the funds in my account and tell me to renew the domains in two hours, using the funds from my account. I try, but the renewals fail again. I try again. Nothing.

I'm trying to transfer all my names out of there. I had been going to Godaddy, but everytime I try to pay online with my credit card, there's some error and I have to call in my order. Other people have problems with Godaddy too. This has gotten very annoying. Now I'm using Domainsite.com and they are cheaper, there online order form works, and email support is very fast.

New sports site gets broken PR

Reports of broken Google PageRank have been coming in from all over the web. My new site is a great example. With 49 weak backlinks listed in Yahoo, My NFL officiating site is PR 6. It should be a 2, maybe 3 in my opinion.

I have a few other PR 6 sites, one with nearly 20,000 backlinks of which at least half are better quality than the best link going to my new sports site.

Travel site's crazy PageRank?

I have according to Yahoo, 738 links coming into my travel Amazon bookstore. The home page is PR3. However, my travel sites page is PR 4. That's so weird because I have so few links from other sites pointing at the internal pages and so many pointing at the homepage. Other pages on the main menu are also PR 4 like my Europe travel books page. OK, I can understand that.

But why are pages that get a link from the homepage and the travel sites page (but not the other pages) also show PR 4 like this Hawaii site page? And with the same links, my advertising page shows PR 0. Also showing PR 0 is this travel DVD page with a link from the homepage (and that's the only link). Oh and now the hompeage is PR 4. What's going on here? I swear it was PR 3 a moment ago.

Now I see. The coder who did this site for me was not an SEO... It seems that my domain/ is PR 3 while my domain/index.php is PR 4. Rookie mistake that I should have seen a long time ago. I still don't see why 501 internal links = PR 4 when 783 externals = PR 3 but I just have to live with that ambiguity...

Cheap sports site

Another new site. I bought this one cheap, 40 bucks. But since it had been made with yahoo sitebuilder I had to spend a good hour or so cleaning up the html. I wanted to cry when I saw that html...

Anyway, this is a weird site for me. It matches my sports theme, giving me 4 sports sites now. The weird thing is that it's a negative site about poor officiating in the NFL. I see very low CTR with YPN and Adsense on my Sports sites anyway, but I would expect this one to be even lower. Who wants to buy something after reading all this stuff about how bad the NFL refs are?

So, how do I market it? I already have it listed in my Jtrotta.com directory. And the previous owner had set up a reciprocal link with another site about poor officiating. But it's pretty sad when you can count a site's links on one hand and still have over half your fingers leftover.

Wow Directory is having a special (5.00 express submissions this week, so they're next on my list. From there, I'm not really sure where to promote this one outside of directories...
